Peter Tunney turns the Post's viral 'banana cover' into fine(r) art - Page Six

It’s the art of the peel.

The Post’s viral cover of artist Maurizio Cattelan’s $120,000 banana-taped-to-a-wall artwork, “Comedian,” is being turned into its own work of art. Peter Tunney, who has galleries in NYC and Miami’s arty Wynwood district, has created two paintings using 30 “Bananas!” Post front pages. He’s calling the works “Dude … Really … Seriously?” and “Time Is Always Now.”

“I saw that cover and just felt it was gold,” Tunney told us of his inspiration. “So I bought 100” copies of the paper. Each piece is priced at $60,000 — adding up to a bananas $120,000.

Tunney, whose work is often inspired by The Post and incorporates images from our stories, has told us: “I buy 10 New York Posts per day. I incessantly clip the New York Post — so I have, like, 10,000 New York Posts in my studio. I find that The Post’s wordsmithing and puniness and relevance is so great, so I’ve lived and died clipping The Post and used it in almost every piece of art.”

The banana was displayed at the recent Art Basel Miami and peeled more headlines than any other artwork or celebrity there. The collectors who bought it for $120,000 told us, “We sense that Cattelan’s banana will become an iconic historical object.”
