DIY BANANA TREE
A banana tree is a great invention that prevents bananas from bruising so they will last longer. I saw one in a nice store recently with a big price tag of $19.99. But I didn’t buy it. Instead, I headed for the hardware department to find a big cup hook with a screw end. Total cost: 98 cents. I screwed it into the underside of an upper cabinet. My bananas now hang properly — up and out of the way, without taking up any counter space. All for 5% of the cost of the fancy banana stand. — Randall
BETTER BROWN SUGAR
I haven’t purchased brown sugar for a long time, even though I use it frequently. That’s because I make it myself. I measure out white granulated sugar in the amount of brown sugar I need at the time. Then I stir in enough molasses to make either light or dark brown sugar — color is the key.
That’s it! (If you look at the ingredients of store-bought brown sugar, you’ll see just two: sugar and molasses.) My homemade brown sugar never gets hard or dried out because I make only the amount I need for when I need it. It comes out perfectly, every time. — Sally
FLOWERS DIRECT
Before you call a local florist or a national floral-delivery company to arrange for an out-of-area delivery, think about this: These services end up involving all kinds of middlemen, which means extra fees and surcharges for phone calls and delivery. And they usually have minimums of about $50. Worse, you’re never sure what your recipient will get because you aren’t speaking with the person who will actually create the arrangement. You can skip past all of these extra people by making one call to a florist in the neighborhood where your recipient lives. You’ll get fresher flowers, a larger arrangement and infinitely better service when you deal direct. — Bettye
GOLF!
A round of golf burns over 1,400 calories if you walk and push the clubs on a wheeled cart for 18 holes. That’s the equivalent of running six or seven miles, depending how long it takes you to get those 18 holes in! — Steve
EARRING ALLERGIC REACTION
If earrings leave your lobes sore, chances are you are allergic to nickel silver, which is an alloy in many types of jewelry. Apply a coating of clear nail polish to the earring posts and backs or clasps, and other parts that come in contact with your skin. Only surgical steel and platinum are free of nickel silver; even 14- and 18-karat gold earrings can contain some of this alloy, to which many people are highly sensitive. You will need to reapply the polish after several wearings. — Phyllis
PEST CONTROL
Cockroaches often enter homes through plumbing holes under the kitchen or bathroom sinks. Plug these tightly with rags or steel wool, and you’ll cause a permanent traffic jam on that roach freeway. The same trick keeps mice at bay, too. — Cliff
PAINT GOOFS
Most home improvement centers, paint stores and hardware stores have bins of “goofs” — gallons and quarts of high-quality paint in custom colors that have been mistinted. Typically, these items are available at near-give-away prices. A gallon of paint is plenty for the typical-sized kid’s room or bathroom. There’s nothing wrong with the paint or the colors; it’s just that for some reason, the color didn’t exactly match someone else’s expectations. — Don
